Spicy Juice

Kylie started throwing up last night at about 8:30 pm and had her dinner out of her the first two times she threw up. The first time was all over the carpet - yummy! I was home alone with the kids and it was pretty loud here. Every time I set Gavin down to attend to Kylie and he just started screaming. That coupled with her crying and screaming made it pretty chaotic. She then continued to dry-heave about every 15-20 minutes for 2 hours. It was so sad. She just cried/screamed really loud and was absolutely miserable. I called the advice nurse to ask about supositories (sp?) and she said they couldn't prescribe any. You know how once you throw up, your body is on auto mode and just keeps it going? Well, that's how it was all night long. She kept throwing up about every half hour. Around 3 am it started spacing out further, which was nice. Thank goodness for white sheets that can be bleeched because there was bile all over the sheets this morning. I called Dr Kettley, aka mom, and she came over to help me with Kylie so I could feed Gavin, change the sheets, etc. Kylie's last vomit was at 7 am so at 8 am we started the "coke routine" where you have 1 tsp of coke (caffeine free for Kylie) every 5 minutes to see if you can keep it down. After each drink Kylie would ask for more. Mom would set the timer and tell Kylie to watch it and wait for it to beep so she could have some more. As Kylie was patiently waiting she asks grandma for some more "Spicy Juice." I got a kick out of that. It was so clever! It worked though, she has gone the whole day without throwing up again. She has also had a banana flavored popsicle and had enough energy to let me bathe her. Thank goodness because the vomit in her hair was pretty crusty and nasty! She is taking a much needed nap now that should go down as a record for her. We're going on 2 1/2 hours right now! That is fantastic! Anyway, I hope that those of you reading this are not sick. I know it's going around right now and it isn't fun. I'm just hoping that the rest of us don't get it.

Oh, Du, I am so sorry. That must have been just miserable for you! I'm glad your mom was there to help. Why Coke? Is it the sugar or the carbination? What does it do?

There is something about the Coke syrup. I've heard 7-up helps settle your stomach, but we've always used coke so I prefer it since I know it works.
Kylie is all better now. She's still tired and melow, but keeping her food and liquids down. yeah!

The boys had that last year and we were up non stop changing sheets and PJs. Teak got it when Doug wasn't home and I had him sleep in bed with me. He was like 4 mths when he got it. The poor kids.

Jules- You can also buy Coke syrup (like at Sav-On pharmacy) and put tablespoons of that on crushed ice. Heidi used to eat that when she'd get her migraines and spend all day on the bathroom floor vomitting. Coke syrup on ice was the only thing she could hold down. Sometimes words can't describe how nasty it gets when kids throw up, so Drew and I have started to take pictures when the kids heave all over the carpet, and always unfortunately on me too. We laugh when we look back at them. My advice is to do this too. That way when you start thinking it would be great to have another kid, you can look at the photos and remind yourself why having two kids is enough!!! Hang in there! How nice to have mom around to help.

Bummer! I hope you all don't get it! We are finally fairly healthy around here, but it's taken about 2 weeks!

Wow! Coke? That is so cool to know. Hopefully I won't need to use that trick anytime soon, but next time one of mine is puking I think I will try it! Thanks for the tip.
